The Computer Culture at the Panjab University dates back to 1966. The computer center has been providing computing and network facilities to whole of the campus. 

Ministry of HRD, Government of India has selected PU as a node to be connected to National Knowledge Commission (NKN) with high network bandwidth. The University Computer Center has established 10 Gigabit campus wide Network to provide high speed connectivity to various departments through National knowledge network (NKN). Almost all the Departments are connected through optical fiber. All Hostels have been made Wi-Fi and students can access internet free of cost with hardware fire-wall installed at Computer Centre with three wide area network links of 1 Gbps (NKN), 1 Gbps (NME-ICT), 165 Mbps (1:1) (Reliance). 

The Computer Centre has hosted network based computing software for Scientists and Social Scientists. A Computing Laboratory is available for Research Scholars to perform his/her tasks. In addition, latest storage device, e-mail Server, Web Server have been hosted at Computer Centre. 

Panjab university has made significant progress in office atomization. It has successfully deployed computerized Diary-dispatch system, HR module and financial module to begin with. 

Computer and Internet access and training to teachers and students

The access to Internet and optimal use of Information Technology by all the faculty members and students has been initiated by providing more than 2000 nodes/internet connection points (excluding Wi-fi points) in various Departments and University Library. The University Library is connected through Inflibnet network with all Departments on the Campus which are availing the facility of online journals provided through UGC Inflibnet. The University has access to National Knowledge Network (NKN) of Govt. of India project through which University students and staff are interconnected through Internet with upto 1Gbps connectivity. All Departments and Hostels (with Wi-Fi) are connected to Computer Centre hosting Gigabit switch through fiber. 

Computer Centre, Department of Computer Science and Applications has been offering short-term awareness Courses for the Faculty, Non Teaching Staff and Research Scholars free of cost from time to time. These courses have been very useful for encouraging the Faculty, Staff and Scholars to make an effective use of Computer Information Technology and other support services. 

Further, the University has provided Computer Systems to most of the Teaching Departments with appropriate configuration for their use in Research/Administration as well as for training of students along with Internet facility. Most of the Departments have the Internet connection in all the laboratories class rooms, and the rooms of the faculty members. 

The University is having its own Website to host date sheets, results, examination forms, etc. on the University Website for the convenience of students/public. 

The University provides network based facility for computing including software support like SPSS, Mathematica, Antivirus etc.
