Founded by Dr. S.S. Bhatnagar at Lahore in 1925, the department of Chemistry is one of the prestigious departments of Panjab University. It has in its faculty highly qualified competent members whose work has been internationally recognized. Several faculty members are recipients of coveted awards such as Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar award, Jawaharlal Nehru fellowship, Raman and Palit awards. Many faculty members are bestowed with F.N.A., F.A.Sc., F.N.A.Sc.. The department has been selected by the UGC for COSIST and Special Assistance Programme (SAP) and it is the Centre for Advanced Studies in Chemistry (CAS) for last 16 years. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India has accorded it the status of "DST-FIST Supported Department". The department has stimulating undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes. Frequent symposia, summer programmes, refresher and orientation courses have been organized for the benefit of University, College and School teachers and talented students. The department has well equipped instrumentation facility and a well stocked library, perhaps one of the best in Northern India with its excellent collection of books, research journals and monographs. THE CITY BEAUTIFUL
Chandigarh, the dream city of India's first Prime Minister, Sh. Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier. Picturesquely located at the foothills of Shivaliks, it is known as one of the best experiments in urban planning and modern architecture in the twentieth century in India and is known as CITY BEAUTIFUL. The foundation stone of the city was laid in 1952. Subsequently, at the time of reorganization of the state on 01.11.1966 into Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pardesh, the city assumed the unique distinction of being the capital city of both, Punjab and Haryana while it itself was declared as a Union Territory under the direct control of the Central Government.
CLIMATE
Chandigarh has cold dry winter, hot summer and sub tropical monsoon. Evaporation usually exceeds precipitation and the weather is generally dry. The area experiences four seasons (i) Summer or hot season (mid-March to Mid-June) (ii) Rainy season (late-June to mid-September); (iii) Post monsoon autumn/transition season (mid September to mid-November); (iv) Winter (mid November to mid-March). February is relatively cold in this part of INDIA, with maximum temperature hovering around 15-220C.
HOW TO REACH CHANDIGARH
Chandigarh is well connected BY ROAD. The two main National Highways connecting Chandigarh with the rest of the country are: NH 22 (Ambala - Kalka - Shimla - Kinnaur) and NH 21 (Chandigarh - Leh). There are regular bus services to most major cites in Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and some parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Chandigarh has a RAILWAY STATION. Regular train connections are available to the national capital New Delhi and to some other junctions like Kalka, Ambala, Amritsar, Bhiwani, Lucknow, Patna, Howrah, Mumbai, Chennai, Trivandrum and Sri Ganganagar.
Chandigarh also has a DOMESTIC AIRPORT. Jet Airways, Jet Lite, Air India and Kingfisher Airlines operate regular flights from Chandigarh to New Delhi and Mumbai.
ABOUT THE EVENT
The department has been holding NATIONAL ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM every year for the last 23 years and this is the XXIV Symposium in this series. The symposium was named as RAM CHAND PAUL NATIONAL ANNUAL SYMPOSIUM in year 2005 in the fond memory of our worthy ex-Vice Chancellor Prof. Ram Chand Paul. Since years this symposium has provided a common platform for those who are in search of current trends, new ideas, and aspirations in the field of Chemical sciences.
The event is aimed to gain insight into the challenges of the present times mainly in the area of
The scientific sessions provide a podium for presentation of invited lectures by distinguished scientists from India and abroad. The research paper presentations by young research fellows provide them opportunity to express their views and scientific work. Prof. Ram Chand Paul Puraskar (comprised of Rs.1000/-) is awarded to three outstanding Young Research Fellows (with two years of research experience) presenting their research findings in the form of posters in different disciplines of Chemistry. Three more awards of Rs. 500 each are given for posters from amongst the research students of this department.
